  • After a slow breakfast, drive to the Huangshan South Gate (approx. 1 hour).
  • Take the park shuttle to the Yungu Cableway and ride up the gentler rear mountain.
  • From White Goose Ridge, walk the ridge trail past:
    • Beginning-to-Believe Peak (Shixin Feng);
    • The sculpted pines of the Beihai area;
    • Refreshing Terrace.
  • Late afternoon: Continue to Bright Summit (Guangming Ding), at 1,860 meters the mountain's highest accessible point, for sunset over a sea of granite peaks.
  • Overnight at a summit hotel. Rooms are simple by five-star standards, but the location is unforgettable and puts you steps from the sunrise viewpoint.

Day 5 | Sunrise Over the Sea of Clouds — Front-Mountain Descent

    • Aoyu (Giant Turtle) Peak;

  • Ride the Yuping Cableway down the steep front face, then transfer to a comfortable hotel near the mountain base.
  • Dinner: A celebratory meal after two days on the mountain. An optional soak in the 42°C hot springs at the mountain foot can be arranged.

Approx. 40 minutes to Tunxi Airport; approx. 30 minutes to Huangshan North Station.

  • Transfer to Huangshan North Station or Tunxi Airport for your onward journey.
  • We suggest a flight or train departing after 1:00 PM.

You will leave carrying the images that define a certain idea of China: mist rising from a willow-fringed lake, twisted pines clinging to impossible granite, and a village so perfectly composed it looks painted rather than built.

What to Know

  • UNESCO status: This itinerary visits three listed heritage landscapes — West Lake of Hangzhou (2011), Mount Huangshan (1990), a rare mixed cultural and natural World Heritage Site, and Hongcun, part of the Ancient Villages in Southern Anhui – Xidi and Hongcun inscription (2000). Lingyin Temple is an important protected temple but is not separately listed.
  • Entry and cable-car prices for reference (peak season March 1–November 30): Huangshan entrance approx. ¥190 (off-peak ¥150); Yungu Cableway approx. ¥80; Yuping Cableway approx. ¥90; West Sea Grand Canyon sightseeing rail approx. ¥100; mandatory park shuttle approx. ¥19 per ride; Hongcun approx. ¥104. All listed activities are included in your package; figures may change.
  • The summit night is deliberate: Mountain hotels are basic and relatively expensive, and rooms sell out weeks ahead, but staying on top is the most reliable way to catch both sunset and sunrise without riding the first cable car up in darkness. Please book early, especially in April–May and September–October.
  • Walking level: Moderate to active. Huangshan involves several hours of stone steps each day, some steep. Cable cars remove the long climbs, but guests should be steady on their feet. Travelers preferring less hiking can shorten the summit route or skip more demanding sections.
  • Weather and the Sea of Clouds: The Sea of Clouds is weather-dependent and cannot be guaranteed. Huangshan creates its own microclimate and can be misty; bring a light rain jacket and layers. April–May and September–November offer the best chances of clear skies and cloud inversions.
  • Optional add-ons: Add Xidi, the quieter scholar's village and co-listed World Heritage site; extend with Tunxi and deeper Huizhou culture; or connect onward to Shanghai, about 2.5 hours by high-speed train.
  • Best seasons: Spring and autumn are best for Huangshan. Hangzhou's West Lake is famous for peach blossoms in late March–April and lotus scenery in summer.
  • Food: Zhejiang cuisine is refined, fresh and lightly sweet, while Huizhou cooking features braised and preserved ingredients, bamboo shoots, river fish and fermented mandarin fish. Please advise dietary needs or allergies in advance.
