7-Day Classical Jiangnan Tour: Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou & Shaoxing

Designed for American Travelers · 5-Star & Boutique Hotels · Meals Included · Private Transportation · Dedicated English-Speaking Guide

Sip tea in a Ming-dynasty garden where every window frames a borrowed landscape, glide across West Lake beneath willowed causeways that have inspired poets for a thousand years, and drift through a canal town in a black-awning boat once navigated by China's most celebrated writers. Beginning amid the Art Deco towers of Shanghai and ending in the wine-scented lanes of Shaoxing, this privately escorted journey through the water towns of the Yangtze River Delta pairs three UNESCO World Heritage legacies with the finest hotels, gardens and cuisine in eastern China.

What to Know

  • Route & pacing: This is a relaxed one-way east China corridor — arrive in Shanghai and depart from Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport (about 1 hour by private car from Shaoxing on the final day), with no backtracking. Every intercity leg is a short, comfortable high-speed train. High-speed or flight connections via Shanghai are also easy if preferred.
  • Three UNESCO sites: the Classical Gardens of Suzhou (inscribed 1997, extended 2000) — including the Humble Administrator's and Lingering gardens — the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou (2011), and points along the Grand Canal (2014), such as Suzhou's Shantang canal district and Shaoxing's Southern Song stone bridges. Yu Garden, Lingyin Temple, Lu Xun Native Place and Shen Garden are celebrated national heritage sites but are not themselves UNESCO-listed.
  • Compulsory advance reservations: Suzhou's major gardens sell real-name timed-entry tickets up to 7 days ahead with limited daily slots; we book the Humble Administrator's Garden for the first entry slot. The Shanghai Museum and Suzhou Museum are free but require real-name reservation and are closed on Mondays (except public holidays). Carry your passport every day.
  • Lingyin Temple free-entry update: From December 1, 2025, the Feilai Peak scenic area — including Lingyin, Yongfu and Taoguang temples — is admission-free, but uses a real-name, half-day time-slot reservation system with no same-day booking. We secure the morning slot; without it, entry cannot be guaranteed at peak times.
  • Lu Xun Native Place: The site is free but requires advance real-name reservation and is closed on Mondays; if your dates fall on a Monday we reorder Shaoxing sightseeing accordingly. Shen Garden charges separately by day and night.
  • Best seasons: Late March–May (peony and plum blossoms, new tea) and September–November (osmanthus, red maples, hairy-crab season) are ideal. Summers are hot and humid; West Lake lotus season (June–August) is beautiful but warm. Winters are cool with far fewer visitors.
  • Walking level: Easy to moderate. The route is deliberately gentle, with short drives and train legs; expect walking on uneven garden rockeries, canal bridges and old stone lanes. The Lion Grove rockery is steep and narrow in places. Comfortable non-slip shoes are recommended.
  • Food: Jiangnan cuisine is refined, subtly sweet and wheat-heavy — soup dumplings, braised pork, vinegar-glazed lake fish, freshwater shrimp, Biluochun and Longjing teas, and Shaoxing yellow-wine cooking. Not spicy. Please advise any allergies (seafood, gluten, alcohol) in advance.
  • Optional extensions: Add a night in a canal town (Wuzhen or Xitang), extend to the tea lakes of Moganshan or the gardens of Yangzhou, or connect onward to Beijing or Xi'an. We're glad to design a pre-trip Shanghai extension or a post-trip Yangtze Delta add-on.
